Celebrated Argentinian composer and guitarist, Maximo Pujol plays at WSGC as part of his European tour.

Sunday, 11th November, 2018 7:30PM

The Recital Hall, Regis School of Music, Sudley Rd, Bognor Regis

WSGC is delighted to be able to play host to one of the world's most important contemporary composers for the classical guitar and are grateful to the Cambridge Guitar Orchestra which has organised his UK appearances.

Máximo Diego Pujol is celebrated today as an important composer, performer and teacher of guitar. His compositions are performed and recorded internationally, and he is sought after to give concerts, master classes and conferences in the most prestigious festivals dedicated to the instrument.  Currently Professor of Guitar at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Manuel de Falla he has also taught children at the Escuela de Arte de Campana in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It all started when Máximo discovered a guitar in a closet in his parent’s home in the suburb of Villa Pueyrredón, Buenos Aires.  He performed his first concert aged 9 and soon after composed a zamba as a birthday surprise for his mother. He studied guitar with Alfredo Vicente Gascón, which deepened his vocation and led him to participate —alongside his teacher— in a study group led by luminary Abel Carlevaro.

While studying at the Buenos Aires Conservatory of Music “Juan José Castro”, Máximo also took private classes on harmony and composition with Leonídas Arnedo.  One of Pujol’s first pieces “Sonatina” won first prize in numerous competitions in Argentina.  He honed his performing skills playing tango and milongas in Buenos Aires night clubs alongside tango stars such as Jorge Sobral and Roberto Goyeneche.  Concurrently, he analysed the works of tango composers like Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla.

Pujol’s music is inspired by and draws on the rich musical heritage of his native Argentina.  Specifically, he has striven for an ever-closer fusion of traditional Argentine tango and formal academic concepts.  Akin to the compositions of Heitor Villa-Lobos and Leo Brouwer, he combines a deep nationalistic expression in his music with the unique technical capabilities that the guitar has to offer.
