Guitarists Flock to Bognor Regis

Posted by admin on December 17, 2011

The recent West Sussex Guitar Festival, held over two weekends at The Regis School of Music, Sudley Road, Bognor Regis has been a resounding success. There were 113 entries for the under 18 classes and 80 entries for the senior sections. However, when it is considered that there were many classes for duets and ensembles, there were a very large number of participants and indeed spectators.

The Festival began with two full days for the under 18s. This was adjudicated by Charles Ramirez, Professor of Guitar and head of the Junior Department at the Royal College of Music. On Friday 25th November, Mark Ashford, Head of Guitar at the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music gave the Festival concert to a packed recital hall and then adjudicated the adults on the following Saturday and Sunday. The concert featured a number of splendid arrangements of popular French songs which Mark had recently recorded at the Thomas a Beckett Church at Pagham.

Classes ranged from non-competitive beginners through to advanced players. There were also ensembles including family groups, guitars with other instruments and with voice. There were even composition and arrangers' classes. Both adjudicators praised the extremely high standard of playing and it was obvious that everyone had put in a great deal of preparation towards their performances. The event is not just a competition since the adjudicators were able to advise on technique and to demonstrate how the performances can be improved.

One of the highlights of the festival is the prestigious West Dean Scholarship which is awarded to a young person playing at grade 5 or above. The winner receives non-residential attendance at the West Dean International Guitar Festival and Summer School 2012, courtesy of West Dean College. The runner up receives a £200 bursary towards the attendance at the college awarded by the West Sussex Guitar Club. The standard of performance in this class was again exceptionally high. The judges had a very difficult decision to make, but after long deliberation chose Torrin Williams as the winner with James Li-Kam-Tin as a worthy runner up.

The classical guitar festival is run by The West Sussex Guitar Club at 46, Sudley Road. Bognor Regis which hosts some 6 concerts each year and holds 6 club evenings where members can come along and play. The next professional concert will be given by the renowned guitarist/composer Graham Devine on Friday the 13th January at 7:30pm followed by a workshop on Saturday 14th January.
