WSGF 2012 A Roaring Success
If shoppers and residents in Bognor Regis wondered what was the cause of the huge invasion of guitarists over the past two weekends then the answer was because they had all entered the West Sussex Guitar Festival now in its 13th year.
The event was held at The Regis School of Music in Sudley Road, Bognor Regis and was a resounding success. There were a record 126 entries for the under 18 classes and 40 entries for the senior sections. However, when it is considered that there were many classes for duets and ensembles, there were a very large number of participants and indeed spectators.
The Festival began with two full days for the under 18s. The Festival was very privileged to have as adjudicator Gary Ryan, Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music. The following weekend was the turn of the adults with adjudicator Mark Ashford, Head of Guitar at the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music.
Classes ranged from non-competitive beginners through to advanced players. There were also ensembles including family groups, guitars with other instruments and with voice. There were even composition and arrangers' classes. Both adjudicators praised the extremely high standard of playing and it was obvious that everyone had put in a great deal of preparation towards their performances. The event is not just a competition since the adjudicators were able to advise on technique and to demonstrate how the performances can be improved.
One of the highlights of the festival is the prestigious West Dean Scholarship which is awarded to a young person playing at grade 5 or above. The winner receives non-residential attendance at the West Dean International Guitar Festival and Summer School 2013, courtesy of West Dean College. The runner up receives a £200 bursary towards the attendance at the college awarded by the West Sussex Guitar Club. The standard of performance in this class was again exceptionally high. The judges had a very difficult decision to make, but after long deliberation chose Patrick Sowden of Chichester as the winner with India Falconer from Fareham as runner up.
A copy of Sibelius Music Software, generously donated by Sibelius was won by David Roe of Sevenoaks for his guitar composition.
Part of the Festival includes a professional guitar concert and this year it was given by the Vida Guitar Quartet who played to a capacity audience. These are one of the most dynamic and vibrant guitar quartets of our time. They will shortly be touring America and we were very honoured to have that calibre of performance come to play for us on our doorstep! It was quite amusing to see a role reversal as Mark Ashford, the adjudicator, who is also one of the Quartet, took to the stage and the youngsters became the judges in the audience.
